運転状態が過酷になると油性剤では効果がなくなり、油膜が破壊され、金属間の接触がおこり、ついには焼付きを引き起こすようになる。
極圧剤とはこのような条件において局部的金属凝着に伴う発熱により金属面と反応して低融点合金を作る、金属と反応して無機塩被膜を作る、分解して低融点金属を遊離するなどして焼付きや摩耗を防ぐ、もので特にギヤー油には重要な添加剤である。
極圧剤と油性剤の違いは極圧剤が高温で効果を発揮するのに対し、油性剤は常温で効果を発揮する。
極圧剤としては硫黄系、りん系の化合物が多く使われているが、この中で特にジチオリン酸亜鉛は酸化防止、腐食防止性を兼ねそなえており、よく使用される。
